What’s Out and In for 2014

– Guest post by: Karen Hockman, Karen Hockman Interiors –

Every year the “Design World” decides what’s hot and what’s not for the new year. I don’t really know how this is decided, except for the fact that this is what you will and won’t be seeing on the pages of your favorite magazines. This is true for your decor and fashion magazines, as they are so closely related.

Ok, so What’s OUT.

Ikat prints.

Diamond Ikat pillows from Z Gallerie.

I still like them.

All-white Kitchens

Well, I am not sure how you can go wrong with this kitchen. It looks clean and fresh. I probably would add a color to the back splash and color on the island. That wouldn’t hurt.

Woodland Creatures

Seriously, just when I decided that a Woodland Creature Christmas Tree for next Christmas would be adorable. I can see how having these creatures all over your house may seem creepy, but a cute little tree. Just saying.

Books reduced to decor

Ok, so I am going to have to agree with this one. I love books. I love the feel of a book in my hand. Yes, I have an Ipad, and have been known to read a book or two on it (great for traveling). I also think books in decor enhances a table or bookshelf, that’s why I never liked covering a book. It takes away from their real beauty.

The Belgian look

I have to admit that I had no idea what this look was. Once I looked it up I saw that it was linen upholstery and neutral tones, basically Shabby Chic. People like the comfort of Shabby Chic. I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

What’s In……………….

Macrame and Fiber-Art Wall Hangings

Are you kidding me? A throwback to 1970. I hope you all saved yours, because today this one will cost you $100. Anyone have a great DIY for this? Sorry, I am not a fan.

Window Sheers

You can buy these anywhere, and they will allow more light in a room.

It’s ok, just ok.

Corduroy Upholstery

Great durable fabric for a sofa or chair.

Throw back again to the late 1960′s.

Ok, so my take on the In’s and Out’s. I think I like the Out’s a little better. The In’s seem to be recycling the mod era of the late 60′s early 70′s. Nothing wrong with that, everything comes back around. The bottom line……your home should be the most comfortable place to be for you, your family, and your life style.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I would love to hear what you think.
