Getaway: Amish holiday experience

If you want to try a unique place to shop for the holidays, take a trip to Lancaster County, Pa.  The Pennsylvania Dutch country is a great family experience for browsing handcrafted items made by the Amish — community members who prides themselves in quality.

The Amish shy away from electricity and “fancy” clothes, but can wheel and deal their goods in the Lancaster Central Market  (since 1730) and the Kitchen Kettle Village.

Kids will love the Amish horse and buggies trotting along the back roads of the rolling hills and farms speckled in hex signs. The Strasburg Railroad  (since 1832) chugs along the tracks giving rides to all ages.

Shop for quilts, jellies, whoopie pies, and of course, shoefly pie.  And don’t forget the legendary pickle ornament.  There are many traditions surrounding this pickle. Hang it on a Christmas tree and let someone find in on the holiday morning.   Some families award that lucky winner the first present of the day.
